New to 1st Gen Celica. Need some assistance.
Hey guys, I have always been an early 80's corolla guy but have always wanted the Celica, well I couldn't pass this up. I just picked up this beauty for $600.00 here in Austin Tx. 1977 Liftback GT Celica with 69,000 miles. The 20r motor has been replaced with a 22R and the original 20R head was reinstalled. I took it home cleaned it up, changed plugs and oil, added external fuel tank and it fired right up! After I added water I noticed water getting into cylinder #1, removed the head and now looking for opinions on the best way to rebuild it. Its going to be a daily driver but I do want some extra HP. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Wow nice price! Welcome!
Find it a bit hard to believe the car has just 69,000 miles. Especially if the engine's been swapped. Probably 169,000, but who knows?
Good luck with your new project!

Welcome to the forum! A mild port, maybe a mild cam, maybe an intake and carb upgrade. These are probably the best methods to getting a little more street spunk. There is a good bit of info on here about 20/22R engines, I'm running one in my Celica.

Thanks. Was a 1 owner car. Dad gave it to son when he got his license, son did his own oil change and forgot the drain plug! Oops! So father and son put the 22r in, son went to collage and the celica sat in the barn for the last ten years, that's how I know it's such low mileage. Plus everything is hardly broken in, ball joints tierod end and such.
Can any one recommend some specks for a decent daily driver head. I figure you guys would know the best setup for this car.
Thanks

They are MANY links to original parts suppliers for Toyota rubbers, badges, decals etc on here.
If you can't find them with the search icon = Just ask !
s_M_i_L_e_Y bars are a different story

Don't have the engine but the 20R/22R hybrid is a pretty good build. Just do a search on it here on the forums. Headers and intakes and what not pop up on here fairly often, if you just keep checking for a few weeks at a time. Good luck. Nice find man.
Not everyone believes in "community". Some consistently hate & are negative. Some are self-preserving egomaniacs. The elitist clique ignores anyone outside their bubble. Lastly, innocent spectators, & then those who believe in community.

I've got a cheap Headman header on my 22R. I believe they work with both 20R and 22R engines, but you'll need to do some research on that. My builder wasn't impressed with the header, but maybe he's prejudiced against Headman. It seemed to work OK for me.

Ummm.... wrong thread.
Re: New to 1st Gen Celica. Need some assistance.
Welcome from Houston.
Does your 22R block have domed pistons in it? Or are they flat-tops?
Most water leaks like that are either a cracked head/ blown head gaskets. You can get the head pressure tested at a machine shop.
BTW. Let me know if you want to sell your A/C setup. -Just because I see it not hooked up-
