there's a build plate at the driver's side door jam area. take a pic of it if you can and post it up. the VIN swap might not be a bad thing... does the plates match the registration you got at least? if so, you have a RA24 model that's SMOG EXEMPT! and NO I DO NOT APPROVE OF VIN SWAPS! IT'S ILLEGAL!...

the 79 "bug-eyed" Celica is a great car! not a lot of people liked them, but i've seen a few that looked nice slammed with a nice set of wheels.
the 20R in it is pretty much bullet proof.

custom wooden dash? the only guy i knew that did that was some guy in Berkely and he had a couple old school Toyota cars where he fabbed up some wooden pieces to repair door panels and dashes. our Toyota community is a very small one out in the Bay Area. almost everybody knows one another and knows ...

WOW, That many celica's around sac ca area ! Why dont I ever see them out driving them ? There are maybe 10 in town and 25-30 local to us. In the valley and the bay area.
